Welcome

This past year has been truly exciting for Blacksburg Transit, its local partners, and the community. The system celebrated  its 26th year in service and won both the Virginia Transit Association Outstanding Program award and the Virginia Governors Safety Board award. However the greatest accomplishment of the year was once again providing safe, accessible, and reliable service to 2,954,000 riders, just shy of the three million mark.

The goals for this year are to increase BT’s contribution to a sustainable environment and continue efforts to build a regional transportation network.

Most people recognize the fact that transit reduces emissions by taking cars off the road; however, they may not realize that BT is constantly exploring ways to reduce the emissions from its  own fleet vehicles. Experimental use of biodiesel fuel is working out well in two test vehicles, and BT is especially excited to announce the purchase of seven hybrid electric buses. These vehicles, which use diesel fuel and electricity, not only reduce the consumption of fossil fuels but also significantly reduce emissions. Delivery of these vehicles is expected sometime in 2011.

Another exciting development is an expanded partnership with the Town of Christiansburg which will include a variety of new routes for area citizens ranging from employment oriented routes to neighborhood connectors and shopping/commerce routes.  BT will also continue to work with other regional transit providers, like the Smartway, to improve connections outside the region.  To keep up with the latest news, route and service information visit www.btransit.org.

It’s been said that the past shapes both the present and future and this remains true for both the organization, and its mission: Blacksburg Transit provides safe, courteous, reliable, accessible, and affordable public transportation to the citizens of the Town of Blacksburg, Virginia Tech, Christiansburg, and partnering communities within the New River Valley.
