Did you know...
We have 150 bus drivers. (A BT driver is responsible for 80 lives when their bus is full.)
Our buses travel 740,000 miles a year. (It would take your parents car 38.5 years to drive that far.)
BT carries 2,400,000 passengers a year. (that's equal to every Blacksburg citizen taking 48 trips on a BT bus.)
Students make up 90% of the BT's riders. (5% are Faculty & Staff and 5% of BT trips are made by the general public.)
There are33 buses in the BT fleet. (If the buses were lined up front to rear, front to rear they would stretch over 6 football fields.)
During the Fall & Spring semesters, 28 buses roam the Blacksburg streets at a time. (Imagine if there were 28 monster BT buses on the roads of Blacksburg at one time.)
Bt also has 11 vans. (Some of these vehicles focus on transporting those people needing more accessible service - a huge concern for us.)
A new BT bus costs more than $350,000. (You could buy 305,882 soft tacos for that much.)
An average bus engine's life is 350,000 miles with only one major rebuild. (You could drive around the world almost 14 times.)
Here's some BT History...
Blacksburg Transit began running bus service for Virginia Tech and Blacksburg residents in 1983 with eight 30 foot buses, one van and seven full time staff. A transit management company was hired by the Town of Blacksburg to start-up the service and manage the operation. Shortly after beginning service, the Town of Blacksburg took over the management responsibilities and has managed the service ever since.
We now have thirty three fixed route 30, 35 and 40 ft. buses and eleven vans. Our service has grown to 2.4 million trips per year serving the citizens of the Town of Blacksburg, Virginia Tech, and the partnering communities within the New River Valley.
The town of Blacksburg has approximately 17,000 permanent residents and 26,000 students. We provide both accessible fixed route bus service and door-to-door accessible van service for those needing it.
90% of our ridership comes from Tech students, 5% from Tech faculty and staff, and the remaining 5% comes from Blacksburg citizens
